You seem to have a problem with directv.

But I’ve never had DirecTV. I worked for them when they started back in the ‘90s, but I’ve never subscribed to their service.

Oh, if you could only see the pallets of returned dish receivers that we get at work.

I just pick these things up for less than a fiver (for months I could get them for $0.59/ea) and then yank out the HD, usually 500GB and 1TB units. I don’t really need the extra storage space these days since I’m not downloading as much as I used to, but it’s become an addiction.
I try to stay away from Dish units as they bugger up the firmware on the drives that makes it difficult to re-use them. That and they’re just a disgusting company. I remember hearing tales of a high-level executive that resigned. She ran into the CEO/founder/president/whatever at some social function and he commented that she was looking great these days and inquired as to what she had done. Her response? “I stopped working for you ...”

If they were I wouldn’t be tearing them to bits.
![]() 02/01/2017 at 20:07 |

Why are you tearing them apart?

Hard drives for a massive RAID array.

Yes you do. I suggest eBay.

Oh goody - I can find even more of them! Oh, wait, that’s not what you meant, is it...

Pfft - where’s the switch to convert the picture to use a B&W TV? It must look terrible...

Well, if it comes down to it I’ll have a hard drive shotput contest. I had one off the balcony at my place back in LA because I didn’t feel like carrying those full-height 5 and 10 MB (yes, megabyte) drives down the stairs. The rules were loosely defined, so I don’t know if I was disqualified or not; I threw mine further, but I hit a tree and broke off a limb. Oops.
![]() 02/01/2017 at 20:32 |

As long as it wasn’t one of your limbs I call it a win. Who even makes a 5 GB drive anymore?!
![]() 02/01/2017 at 20:34 |

Not gigabytes - MEGAbytes. As in less storage than an average flip phone.

Oh crap, that’s not even worth the materials.

A few years ago I needed a CF card for a project but didn’t want to shell out the $$$ for a 64GB card so I started scrounging around the house. I found what I thought I needed in a Cisco router I had laying around, but it wasn’t until I started the disassembly for this project that I realized that the card was 64MB and not 64GB...

I might have made a few bucks if I sold those things by the pound for scrap metal - they were freakin’ HEAVY.

No doubt.

And the sound. They took a while to spool up, sort of like starting a turbofan engine on a jet, with similar noise. The vibration when the heads moved could shake a table, so computers with those drives needed to be on very firm surfaces. They were also incredibly slow and failure prone; I’m still ultra careful around spinning hard drives thanks to my experiences 30+ years ago, even though I know today’s drives don’t have the same problems.

Yeah, you need a fuckton of rca cables now.
...unless you have a giant duffle bag of assorted cables too.

Costco plastic tubs full. And this is after replenishing after moving a few years back. Must. Stop.

You stole a bunch on Nielsen boxes didn’t you? Quick, tune them all to Velocity and BBC America!

Are those all ird’s?
Is there a stand alone fix that I’m unaware of?
![]() 02/01/2017 at 22:04 |

Yeah, mostly HR23s. They’re just parts donors, purchased on the cheap for their hard drives.

Ok, just checking. I was about to start hanging and aiming the e-85 5 lnbf dish I have sitting here. Lol

Because what discovery networks needs is more incentive to show commercials
